West Palm Beach police arrest man for armed robbery in alleyway

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) — A man is accused of robbing another man in an alley and making a getaway with $10, according to the West Palm Beach Police Department (WPBPD).

According to an arrest affidavit from WPBPD, the incident occurred on July 17 in an alleyway near Broadway Avenue. Surveillance footage taken at the scene shows at 10:39 a.m. the victim was walking in an alleyway when a man on a bicycle begins to ride behind him.

The suspect identified as, Bernard Wells, gets off the bike and proceeds to follow the victim. The affidavit notes, the actions of the robbery occurred out of the camera view.

According to the affidavit, the victim reported that Wells pointed a gun into his stomach, and when the victim tried to run, the suspect possibly pistol-whipped him in the back of his neck and head.

The affidavit says Wells, 20, then got away with the victim's black iPhone and $10 before fleeing on the scene on his bicycle.

Through video footage one of the West Palm Beach police officers was able to identify the suspect, the arrest report says. On July 30, the investigating officer went to Wells' grandmother's house who was able to positively identify him.

Before Wells' arrest, police note in the affidavit, that he was currently out of jail on a surety bond after being booked for counts of possession of fentanyl/controlled substance without a prescription. The affidavit also states Wells is a convicted felon who was guilty of felony battery.

Records show Wells was booked into Palm Beach County Jail at 11:05 p.m. on one count of robbery with a firearm and one count of felon in possession of a firearm.
